Objective To explore the effect of medico- mental intervention in dealing with excessive internet use inpatients. Method 48 accumulative Internet Addiction patients must be in hospital for 30 days on average, and took antidepressants if his severity index of SDS >0.60; All of them received cognitive behavioral therapy. The stages of their hospitalization are divided by 3 part. The first part is about 10 days. In this part, we constrainted their behavior of on-internet by the environment of enclosed hospitalized type, repuested them to abide daily regime and ward management define. At the beginning of the second part, they began to receive cognitive behavior therapy and/or family psychotherapy. The contents included : to introduce the symptoms of IAD; to explain the mechanism of IAD according to cognitive behavioral model of Davis; to discuss reinforcement factor in their surrounding environment and methods of change relation to IAD by themselves; to encourage them accommodate their lives without internet, to have friendly relation with other patients and to attend group activity; to discuss how to use self-control methods in their discharged lives and work out the plans of life and learning about out-hospital. everybody should be evaluated by Internet Related Questionnaire and Chinese psychosomatic health scale(CPSHS) to know their heavier internet usage and the damage on their mind and body at the beginning of hospitalization and the 30 days after discharged respectively. Serum cortisol levels should also be measured to evaluate their stress level and P300 should be checked to evaluate their cognitive function. Result: 1. 42 of the 48 patients took antidepressants . The everage score of SDS after treatment was significantly lower than baseline (p<0.05). 2. 8 factors "Tolerance","Escape from other problems","Reduced activities","Loss of control "Related activities","Negative effects"," Withdrawal","Craving" of the Internet Related Questionnaire (Internet use survey) were significantly fewer than baseline(p<0.05) ; though the "Introversion" was lower than baseline, it had no significant difference (p>0.05). 3. After treatment ,the scores of 5 factors "Eyes and Ears","Skeleton and Musculature","Nervous system","Anxiety","Depression" of CPSHS were obvious lower than baseline respectively (p<0.05);there were no significant difference between post-treatment and the norm (p>0.05) though they were also lower than the norm. 4. after treatment the level of serum cortisol was significantly lower than baseline (p<0.05). 5. the wave amplitude of P3 was significantly lower and the latency period of P3 was significantly shorter(p<0.05). Conclusion:1. IAD patients would be hurt in eyes, skeleton and muscular systerm nervous system , and become anxious and depressive.;2. The medico-mental intervention hospitalization model can relieve the Internet Addicted symptoms and its physically and mentally damage, decrease the stress level of patients, and improve their cognitive funtions.
