Objective: To investigate the correlation between the polymorphism of FcεRIβgene promoter(-109C/T) and the development of asthma. Methods: The –109C/T polymorphism of FcεRIβpromoter region was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) analysis in 45 asthmatic subjects and 45 healthy control subjects. Serum total IgE levels were determined by the Enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay(ELISA). Results:(1) There was no significant difference in the distributions of the genotypes(C/C,C/T,T/T) between the asthmatic group and the control group(P>0.05). T allele frequency was 0.644 in asthmatic group and 0.578 control group, which was not different between the two groups(P>0.05). (2) The serum total IgE levels were significantly different among the genotypes in asthmatic group(P<0.01). A homozygosity for the –109T allele was associated with elevated total serum IgE(P<0.01).Conclusions :(1) There is no significant correlation between the polymorphism of FcεRIβgene promoter and the development of asthma. (2) The polymorphism of FcεRIβgene promoter may be an important genetic factor that influences total serum IgE levels in patients with asthma.
