Objective:Although COPD and asthma are different pathologies, many patients sharecharacteristics from both entities. These cases can have different evolutions andresponses to treatment.Nevertheless, the evidence available is limited, and the study ofthis phenotype may identify possible gaps in our understanding of COPD andasthma.Total serum IgE includes all kinds of specific IgE.The aim of this paper is todiscuss the expression and meaning of total serum IgE in the patients with acuteexacerbation of Asthma and COPD overlap syndrome. Methods:We analysed datas from26cases with acute exacerbation of Asthma and COPDoverlap syndrome,27cases with acute exacerbation of COPD and29cases with acutebronchial asthma.All82patients were in accordance with the inclusive criteria, andhospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University fromNovember2012to November2013.The items of each case we collected includedage, sex, body mass index(BMI),allergic history, smoking history, total serumIgE,erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR),The total number of peripheral bloodeosinophilia cells and pulmonary function test.Descriptive data were given asmeans±SD(x±s).Continuous variables were checked for normal distribution using theKolmogorov-Smirnov test and tested by analysis of one-way analysis ofvariance.Differences betwteen groups of enumeration datas were assessed by Kruskal-Wallis test. Discrete variables were reported and compared by2test or Fisher, sexact test where approprite. For correlation analysis the pearson correlation coefficientwas calculated if datas fitted normal distribution,or we calculated Spearman coefficient.Results:1.The level of total serum IgE in the group of Asthma and COPD overlapsyndrome was309.3±323.1IU/ml and was higher than normal range. There were nosignificant differences in the total serum IgE levels,ESR, the total number of peripheralblood eosinophilia cells,FVC,FEV1and BMI between group of Asthma and COPDoverlap syndrome, group of COPD and group of bronchial asthma(P>0.05).2.The levels of FEV1%pred for group of Asthma and COPD overlap syndromewere significantly lower than group of bronchial asthma(P<0.01).3.The levels of age for group of Asthma and COPD overlap syndrome were lowerthan group of COPD(P<0.01),and the change values of FEV1after usingbronchodilators in group of Asthma and COPD overlap syndrome was significantlyhigher than group of COPD(P<0.01).4.Smokers were more common in the group of Asthma and COPD overlap syndromethan group of Asthma.Conclusions:1. The mean levels of total serum IgE in patients with overlap phenotypeCOPD–Asthma is higher than normal, but there were no significant differences in thetotal serum IgE levels among patients of Asthma and COPD overlap syndrome, patientsof COPD and patients of bronchial asthma.Total serum IgE can not be used indifferentiation diagnosis.2.There was statistic significance in the levels of FEV1%pred between patients ofAsthma and COPD overlap syndrome and patients of bronchial asthma.3.Smokers were more common in patients of Asthma and COPD overlap syndromethan patients of Asthma.
