The characteristic of historic areas in the suburb of Shanghai is Ming-Qing Jiangnan regional architectural features and strong country flavor. Alleys as an important part of the historic areas, is not only the transport space, but also the space of shopping, gossip and entertainment, reflecting the region's historical, economic, and cultural levels, displaying the region's outlook and characteristics. The protection of historic areas is a directly method to protect the outlook and characteristics of historic areas. Having researched into alleys in historic areas in the suburb of Shanghai, this article analyses the types of alleys in these areas from function, grade of conservation, and relationship between alley and both side, and specifies five characteristic that is broken-line pattern of alleys, suitable space scale, continuous and unified interface and abundant nodes, which will be profitable for further research to alleys of historic areas in Shanghai suburbs.The main thread of the dissertation is:The first part is Chapter One. It states the significance of this research, the current situation in and out of China and the researching approach of the essay, and also puts forward the framework of the essay.Chapter Two introduces the development of protection of alleys. This chapter mainly from the policies and practices introduce the development of protection of alleys in historic areas in and out of China, especially in the suburb of Shanghai.Chapter Three focuses on the types of streets belong to historic areas in the suburb of Shanghai and the characteristics of alleys. First, the first part of this chapter, briefly introduce the general situation of alleys in historic areas in the suburb of Shanghai, then do a preliminary analysis for the impact of the historical features on the historic areas in the suburb of Shanghai. Second, the second part of this chapter, according to the social function, the protection level and the relationship, classified the alleys in historic areas in the suburb of Shanghai, finally got the five characteristics.
