Research On Integrated Conservation & POE Of South Zhongshan Road In Hangzhou

The protection of historic districts is playing an important role in the cultural heritage of mankind all over the world.South ZhongShan Road shows magnificent glory among the antique blocks, because of its longest cultural history, special status and different interesting legends. Backward to Song dynasty, it was well known as "Imperial Street", and with self-renewal day by day, finally turned into a living street, with groceries & stores in vast numbers. What should to be mentioned, it shows less impaction of modern city life: nearly all of elements have been kept well, that is, outlines of spatial framework, arrangement for the lanes & alleys, geographic numbering system as well as the famous brands for centuries in the signboards. As a miracle for recording various kinds of information about geography, history, popular life and etc., it deserves to be the representative of the culture & history for Hangzhou.The author fortunately got the opportunity to participate in "The project of integrated renovation of South ZhongShan Road, Hangzhou city", which began from 2008 and was aimed to bring renascence into the so-called "Imperial Street".By analyzing the circumstance and background of Zhongshan South Road, the theoretical guidance for the historic districts protection consisting of the organic renewal concepts of Hangzhou and the authenticity principle was put forward. Therefore, based on the study of some theoretical issues, the objects which need to be fixed up in the Zhongshan South Road districts, was devided into two forms, the physical form & the social form。With the situation of Zhongshan South Road fully considered, a series of methods and strategies were launched, including to be original, and to be harmonious while remaining distinction.Finally, a Post Occupancy Evaluation has been made on this Integrated Conservation.
