Using the line transect method, the biodiversty of birds and mammals in the Saihanwula nature reserve have been investigated from 2006 to 2007. At the same time, a several species of rare birds and mammals were monitored in order to explore a wildlife monitoring system.Totally 152 species of birds (17 orders, 47 families and 102 genera) were investigated in this area, including 3 first-line protected species and 28 second-line protected species in China. In addition, there are 3 species of birds in this area is embodied in the indangered degree list of IUCN. Totally 37 species of mammals (6 orders, 14 families and 31 genera) were investigated in this area, including 3 second-line protected species in China and 8 species of mammals is embodied in the indangered degree list of IUCN.The monitoring results indicate that 2 species of rare birds have added in this area compared with 1990s. The distribution area of Pucrasia macrolopha has expanded much to the north; the population density of Aquila chrysetos and Nemorhaedus goral appears increasing; the populatin density of Canis lupus, Lynx lynx and Cervus elaphus are recovering. The biodiversity monitoring is a research hotspot in the world and it has significant value to the globale biodiversity conservation. However, the research about this is very scarce in the domestic. The primary monitoring system of rear birds and mammals in this area has been established. The practice in 2006-2007 shows that the monitoring system is reasonable and feasible. It would be gradually perfected in the future practice, and this monitoring system would be popularized to the other nature reserves.
