The process of rapid urbanization leads to more intense social conflicts, making urban crime increasingly prominent.Campus security issues have received widespread attention as the calls for building safe campuses and safe communities grow.University towns are more challenging to manage due to their relatively complex social condition and highly shared public space. On the one hand, with the slowdown of the expansion of university towns, the post-occupancy evaluation of campus environment has attracted more attention, but the object of the evaluation is mainly the physical environment of university towns, and is rarely the environmental perception of the students, who are the main users of the university towns. On the other hand, crime prevention in China mainly relies on management methods such as legal deterrence and security management, and rarely uses environmental planning and design methods to prevent crime from a spatial perspective.Based on this background, this dissertation intends to take Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center as an example to evaluate students' environmental perceived safety and explore the relationship between students' safety perception and environmental planning, design and management of the university town. This dissertation adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the relationship between the environmental characteristics of Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center and students' safety perception through literature reviews, questionnaire survey,Public Participation Geographic Information System,Arc GIS and SPSS software analysis, mathematical statistics and other methods. We analysed the correlation between location and microscopic streetscape features and students' safety perception, and established an evaluation index system for the safety perception in the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, according to which the strategies for optimizing the university town environment to enhance students' safety perception are proposed. This research can be divided into the following four parts. The first part(Chapter 1)is an introduction, which aims to clarify the significance of the research on environmental safety perception evaluation in university towns, and define the object and scope of the research. In addition,it reviews the research and practice related to the planning and design of university towns and campuses, crime prevention through environmental design and safety perception evaluation, emphasizing the lack of environmental planning and design tools in the campus security management of university towns in China, and laying a realistic background foundation for the following research. The second part(Chapter 2)is a theoretical foundation study on the evaluation of environmental perceived safety.Based on the current spatial situation of Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, the traditional criminological theories, such as Daily Activities Theory and Rational Choice Theory, and the environmental criminological theories, such as "eyes on the streets",Defensible Space and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design(CPTED),are reviewed. The domestic and international researches on CPTED theory, relevant practical cases and organizations are discussed. We summarized the CPTED application experience that can provide useful reference for the evaluation of environmental safety perception in university towns. We also summarized and refined the research methods and the factors influencing safety perception evaluation, providing the theoretical basis for the following empirical research. The third part(Chapters 3,4 and 5)is the problem analysis and empirical research.Firstly, taking the Wushan Campus of South China University of Technology as an example,an exploratory survey on the environmental perceived safety evaluation of a single campus is carried out,and the six principles of CPTED are analyzed in terms of their reliability, importance ranking and correlation analysis, and problems that are easily missed in the environmental perceived safety evaluation in universities are explored. For example, the traditional survey method is too difficult to mark the location accurately to conduct quantitative analysis on the perceived safety evaluation of a specific space;it is also too difficult to identify the environmental factors that influencing students' perceived safety and to establish an evaluation index system for the campus environmental perceived safety. In order to remedy the above shortcomings, the analysis of spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of the evaluation of environmental perceived safety in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center is carried out using the public participation GIS method and photo scoring method respectively, and the evaluation index system of the environmental perceived safety in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center is put forward based on the macro spatial location factors and micro streetscape characteristics factors that influence the perceived safety. The fourth part(Chapter 6)is the regularity summary and strategy study.Based on the evaluation index system of environmental perceived safety in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, the strategies of environmental planning, design and management to enhance students' perceived safety is described from the macro, meso and micro levels.Taking Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center as an example, this paper conducts an empirical study on the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of the evaluation of environmental perceived safety, and achieves certain innovative results on the evaluation methods of Public Participation Geographic Information Systems and the research content of the student-centered campus environmental safety perception evaluation. The results of this research can supplement and improve the environmental safety planning and design guidelines for university towns and provide reference for the scientific and rational construction of safer campus environment in Chinese universities.
