| In the modern time, the development of Shanghai city had the close relationship with the Shanghai port, therefore, their correlation was always noted. But the most of existing studies are the qualitative, and it was lack of the in-depth study.This paper has the target of the detailed study for the Port-City Relationship of the modern Shanghai(1843～1937). Based of the defining spaces of the city and port, this paper analyse the theme of Shanghai Port-City Relationship by three respects:the relationship between the extension of the city district and the port district; the relationship between the port and the city industry; and the support to the municipal construction from the Shanghai port.According to the study, we can find that the extension of the Shanghai city and port are highly correlated. Because of the International Settlement of Shanghai, Shanghai had the new chances to improve the port in the respect of quantity and quality, then the Settlement became the center of Shanghai city. The port district was transferred to the old city district and Poodong district. In the city planning of Shanghai, the role of the port was very important too.This paper improves this Relationship also from the economic perspective, and get the conclusion that it was strong and sustainable. The Shanghai port directly affect the layout of Shanghai city industry, even the inner port of Woosung River.The Wharfage was similarly proving that Shanghai port supported the development of Shanghai city from the perspective of the finance. According to the growth of trade, the Wharfage of the International Settlement grew year by year, but the ratio in the finance system declined; the declined ratio was transferred to the Chinese city, and supported its construction, so this was the sequential condition.In a short word, the Port-City Relationship of modern Shanghai was the kind of promoting each other and common prosperity, and this relationship helped Shanghai become the most prosperity metropolis. |
