Abstract/Summary:
Much has been researched and published regarding the history and aesthetics as topics related to tall buildings. There are, however, few references available that deal with the planning of tall buildings. The purpose of this study is to furnish aid to persons involved with the execution of tall building by establishing useful data that could be used as criteria for development, planning and design of tall buildings. Development of tall buildings could be determined by design factors; these factors have several parameters such as siting (site location), user needs (single & multi-function), functional requirements (space needs) and structural demands. These design parameters are dependent upon planning considerations and building systems. Items related to planning considerations are planning modules, lease spans, floor-to-floor heights, building functions, core planning and vertical transportation. Structural systems, mechanical & electrical systems, enclosure systems and building serviceability could be considered as building systems in tall building design. These considerations are interdependent with each other and they affect the overall building design. Tall buildings are uniquely expressed by their building systems where their form, composition and exterior aesthetics is determined by their functional requirements. Information regarding environment systems was not always available on all of the buildings researched, so they were not analyzed.
