The implementation of lean production techniques within the U.S. automobile industry has resulted in higher profits and product quality. Other industries have implemented lean production with varying degrees of success. This dissertation examines the U.S. industrial furnace and oven OEM manufacturers to determine if this industry has implemented lean production, and if it has, did it realize the benefits advertised in the popular press. By utilizing lean production techniques in the production of industrial furnaces and ovens, the financial strength of U.S. industrial furnace and oven manufacturers can be maximized and the negative impact on the environment minimized. This study examined if the benefits of lean production in production line manufacturing systems is transferable to this customized industry.
