Evolution Of The People's Daily's Role In Senior Official Corruption Case Reports

As the mouthpiece of the central committee of the communist party of China, what role does "People's Daily" play in reporting on corruption among senior officials? What is the paper's developmental track? What role should it play in the report of the official corruption case? Leading in China's public political opinion, how does the paper reshape its role as a media player in reporting corruption cases of high-ranking officials?Based on the role theory of sociology, this thesis analyzes the corruption cases of senior officials that have been reported in "people's Daily" since the reform and opening up, describes the operational characteristics in performing its role and sorts out the evolutionary track of the changing role. And this thesis makes a review on the irreplaceable role it plays, among other Chinese media players, in reporting corruption cases involving senior officials'reports and the social responsibility it shoulders in political life of the country and reveals the related historical situation and other factor that influences its function and responsibility.After searching the database of people's daily, the author takes the 960 reports as materials about provincial and ministerial level officials of corruption cases relate to 97 judicial proceedings since the reform and opening up, systematically analyzes the paper's history of reporting such cases and divides the evolution of its trajectory into three stages: 2001 to 1978,2002 to 2011,2012 until now.This thesis points out, the reports in "people's Daily" about senior officials'corruption cases show that the paper's role as a media player has been advancing with the times. To adapt to the reform of China's political system and economic transformation, the paper has undergone gradual quantitative changes while performing its three traditional roles——a political motivator, a publisher of official news and a builder of the image of the party and government——and presents itself before the public in a timely manner as a new role of revealing facts and criticizing in public.This paper analyzes the problems arising in the course of revealing senior officials' corruption cases and the reasons behind these problems. From the perspective of strategic development, this paper seriously reviews the unique influence of reporting corruption cases on the country's political life. This paper points out that "comprehensively implement the rule of law" is the principle for the party and government's governance. Both reform measures and crackdown on corruption should be carried out under the framework of the rule of law. As the mouthpiece of the central authority of China's Communist Party, the People's Daily must perform, to a greater extent, its roles as a speaker to voice public opinion, an organ to reveal facts and a public critic to comment on social events.The paper also provides a new constructive thinking for the paper to perform its leading role of expressing political opinion on half of the CPC Central Committee by reporting high-level corruption cases.
