Empirical Research On Image Narration In Relation To The Television Broadcast Of The Olympic Games

Outdoor television broadcasting was first employed for the Games of theâ…ªOlympiad held in Berlin,1936 and opened a new chapter for the news broadcast of the Olympic Games.Hence,the television,as a new medium,plays a more and more important role in the Olympic Games with special advantages.The television broadcasting images of the i00 meters event at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games improved significantly when compared to the images of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games,which was held 10 Games after the Berlin Olympic Games.In fact,the television broadcasting of the Olympic Games is a "man-made product".The Olympic Games displayed on the television screens are the "Television Olympics",which demonstrate the Olympic Games in the closest approach.Television broadcasting of the Olympic Games is a type of visual language and speaks via images.The television screens represent the eyes of the audience.However,"What does it tell?" and "How does it tell?" narrated by the television broadcast in the Olympic Games comprise an in-depth content of this research.The aim of this research is to understand the changes of the images broadcast by the television and the factors of influence via the analyses in relation to the television broadcast of the Games.Based on the narrative,semiotic and communication theories,this research compares the coding of the television broadcasting of 100 meters event of the two Olympic Games,analyzes the differences,narrates the development of the television broadcasting in relation to the Olympic Games,investigates the formation of television broadcasting and the internal and external factors which influence the television broadcasting of the Games via Document Analysis,content analysis and in-depth interviews.Results of research:(â… ) The first television broadcast of the Olympic Games in history occurred at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.The images regarding the television broadcast of the Berlin Games demonstrated a documentary of the Games with an image narrative style.Shooting techniques,for instance,full shots and dollying were employed to reflect a complete picture of the Games.(â…¡) Changes in relation to the images of television broadcast of I00 meter event at 1984 Los Angeles Games(ten Games after the Berlin Games) were made.The images of television broadcast presented a narrative style of expressionism.The facial expressions of the athletes were captured via close shots and close-ups.Hence,the athletes' sportswear were therefore broadcast.This type of invisible advertisements brought about a strong commercial atmosphere to the television broadcast of the Games and influenced the narrative means of the television broadcast of the Olympics thereafter.(â…¢) The conditions of image broadcasting in relation to the television broadcast of the Games include:international signal transmission,selection of camera and shooting positions,shooting techniques and image editing.The main components of image narration include images,movements,colors,non-language representations,slow motion and animation.(â…£) The internal factors of the television broadcast of the Games include the formulation of television broadcast plans,technical requirements of television broadcasting,the selection of signals and encoding of the broadcast and the selection of image editing of the television broadcast.The external factors which affect the television broadcast of the Games include cultural values,political demands,the desires of investors and the advancement of technology.This research recommends:the television broadcast of the Beijing Olympic Games shall include the image narration of documentary and expressionism and intensify the narration ability of expressionism in particular.Images shall be edited via switching of lenses and dollying shooting technique.Distortion lenses,special effects and mirror-like designs shall produce various beautiful pictures and images which can move and attract the audience in order to enhance the unique Chinese television aesthetics with regard to the television broadcast of the Olympic Games.
