Technique of virtual prototyping especially for complex products is one of the most challenging, active subjects in Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems. Researchers from both industry and academic are plying more and more attention to theories and applications of virtual prototyping engineering. To use virtual prototypes instead of real prototypes to simulate and test products from every side has great significance in improving products quality, decreasing developing cost and shorting the developing cycle. Virtual prototyping engineering covers almost every walk of life. Based on the subject named "Research on Virtual Prototyping Simulation Supporting Platform/Environment", which is one of the vital research subjects of the tenth five-year plan established by the committee of national defense science and industry, the general technology of virtual prototyping, product conceptual design technology, workflow system, decision support system and theories and realization technology of virtual prototyping support platform in grid environment were deeply researched and discussed, system architecture was advanced, key technique and system principle were presented. The primary work and remarks of the paper are:After research on virtual prototyping engineering for a long time, architecture of virtual prototyping supporting platform for complex products based on CORBA was presented. The system was easily established and deployed, a unified form for mechanical, electronic, software and control fields involved in virtual prototyping supporting system was gave, system inner structure, workflow and information integration were discuss deeply.Conceptual design sub system of virtual prototyping for complex products was designed and realized. Problem of transferring and displaying design model data in distributed fields was resolved by web services technology and using XML to describe content data in KQML creatively, which was the agent communication language. A service-oriented, supporting distributed, heterogeneous and multi-field collaborative product conceptual design supporting platform was established. Integrating and sharing multidisciplinary model data problem were resolved and robusticity and validity of product conceptual design system were improved.Based on deeply research on workflow modeling theory and method, an object-oriented method of workflow modeling and supporting collaborative workflow management system in virtual prototyping support platform were proposed, and made the stable foundation for realizing an own copyright, a lot of IPT teams participating, facing multi-field and complex products virtual prototyping supporting system.Complex decision-making problems in virtual prototyping for complex products are difficult to use general decision-making methods and system engineering methods to solve.
