A Comparative Study On Emotional Communication Strategies Of Chinese And American Foreign Affairs Spokespersons In The Age Of Converged Media

Abstract/Summary:
General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized during the 30 th collective study of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee: "Telling Chinese stories well,spreading Chinese voices well,and showing a real,three-dimensional and comprehensive China are important tasks to strengthen our country’s international communication capacity building." The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson,as an important subject of our country’s external voice,not only undertakes the important function of declaring foreign policy,but also actively participates in international communication activities under the new situation.Through the expression of their views and emotional attitudes,and with the help of various means of communication,they show the core of our country’s foreign policy,views,positions and Chinese cultural thoughts.For a long time,the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has mainly used the rational communication method of laying out facts and reasoning.However,as the communication environment changes under the new situation,the use of emotional communication as an auxiliary method can greatly improve the effect of external communication.The communication method of blending emotion and reason,knowing it with reason,and moving it with emotion can not only make the communication of our country’s foreign policy directly and powerfully,but also make the telling of Chinese stories more vivid and penetrating.This article takes Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian and US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price as the research subjects,through a comparative analysis of their emotional communication strategies in a media-integrated environment,pointing out the direction for the strategy optimization and improvement of Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokespersons,and then explore how to use emotional communication strategies to tell Chinese stories and convey Chinese voices.The research materials mainly focus on the 2021 full-year press conference documents and tweets of the spokespersons of the two countries: as of December 31,2021,a total of 114 Zhao Lijian press conference documents and 1,261 tweets have been collected;Price has 95 press conference papers and1,841 tweets.The researchers use Jef Verschueren’s "Linguistic Adaptation Theory" as the theoretical framework to code the text materials,combine Randall Collins’ "Interaction Ritual Chains" and "Emotional Public" and other theories to conduct frame analysis and text analysis.Their emotional communication strategies are compared,in order to explore the consistency and differences of the two countries’ spokespersons’ emotional communication strategies,their respective advantages and disadvantages,and the challenges and coping strategies faced by Chinese speakers’ emotional communication.The results of the study show that Chinese and American speakers are consistent in terms of language context,language structure and language dynamics,and have formed a closed loop in emotional communication activities.Among them,Chinese speakers are significantly better than the United States in terms of code switching,discourse rhetoric,tone expression,communication form and topic setting,which also makes their communication content have an advantage in the overall communication scale and interaction of the Twitter platform.However,due to the obvious "internal propaganda thinking" of the Chinese spokesperson’s external communication,and the lack of emotional communication symbols that integrate China and foreign countries,their communication activities have limited impact on overseas audiences and cannot widely arouse their emotional resonance.In the future,Chinese speakers should refine emotional pragmatic strategies,create an emotional communication symbol system suitable for international communication,and skillfully use immersive emotional communication media to enhance the awareness of internal and external emotional linkages.On the basis of the previous research,the researchers combined social psychology-related theories such as "emotional interaction experience","emotion maximization","emotional target structure change",and "emotional background" to the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to tell Chinese stories in the era of integrated media.The application of emotional strategies is analyzed: the integration of emotion and reason,to enhance the emotional experience of Chinese stories;to touch the scene,to amplify the positive emotions of Chinese stories;to preserve the sense of things,to explore the international points of Chinese stories;to control emotions,to grasp the rational scale of Chinese stories.In the era of integrated media,the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs should,on the basis of rational communication,make good use of emotional communication strategies to continuously enrich the cultural connotation and expression of Chinese stories,narrow the emotional distance with overseas audiences,and make Chinese ideology and culture spread overseas farther and deeper.
