Smartphone provides a wide variety of notifications to users.Although mobile notifications can make people receive some real-time information which is useful, notifications can cause some negative user experience problems, such as information overload and attention fragmentation. In order to address these problems,we aim to understand how users interact with notifications in the real environment and how contextual factors are linked to specific types of interaction behavior between users and notifications. In our work,we tried to use a user research tool,CAUX,based on context awareness to collect real-world data related to notification. And we conducted many empirical studies to systematically understand user notification interaction behavior in order to guide the user experience design of mobile products. Our research work of this thesis can mainly be divided into four parts:(1)this work broke down the natural interaction behaviors into different stages through observing and analysing user interaction behaviors related to notification in the real environment, and then proposed a notification task model.(2)extending the ability of collecting data related to notification based on context awareness and developing a notification data collecting system to collect a wide range of user data from the real world, such as user behavioral data and contextual information.(3)Under the guidance of task model, using statistical testing and data visualization methods to deeply analyze user behavior patterns involved in interacting with notifications in real environment from different perspectives.(4)In order to understand how contextual factors affect the user behavior related to notification,we conducted two in-situ studies of notification.First,by using multilevel regression modeling method,we systematically and deeply understood the daily contextual factors in each stage of the notification task model. Moreover,a comparative study of young people and old people is conducted to understand whether there are differences in the influence of contextual factors on interaction behavior among different groups. In this work,we used data-driven quantitative data analysis method to analyze mobile notification in real world. The research results shows that:(1)we can effectively collect a lot of real-time user data related to notification through a user research tool based on context awareness.(2)Mobile notifications affect the daily life of users in different degrees, and the number of mobile phone notification, the types of notification from different sources and the usage patterns of the mobile phone affect different interaction strategies in dealing with notifications.(3)From the two aspects of interaction process and user groups,it is confirmed that the effect on user interaction behaviors of notifications are associated with several contextual factors such as,location, activity, ambient brightness and noise level etc.We empirically evaluate this collecting method across a range of research questions, and these research results can help researchers systematically understand interaction behaviors and influencing factors related to notification. It can provide several guideline supports for design and operation of products in the future.Researchers can use these findings to guide the design of intelligent notification systems in the future and the improvement of user experience and to improve users’ digital well-being in intelligent products.
