Classical books and records serve as valuable sources that document the evolution and dissemination of civilization of a country or nation,while also preserving the cultural memory that has been passed down from generation to generation.These books and records are crucial in fostering cultural self-confidence and community awareness among Chinese people.However,with the advent of the internet and the influx of foreign cultures,Chinese cultural memory is at risk of being eroded by multicultural disintegration.The public is inundated with a plethora of information,both good and bad,making it challenging to delve deeply into topics related to ethnic identity,identity,and cultural history.This ultimately leads to the gradual erosion of local cultural memory by foreign cultures.In light of this,China in the Classics was launched on CCTV’s comprehensive channel during the 2021 Spring Festival.This program utilized television as a media platform to showcase the wisdom of Chinese civilization over the centuries through the use of Chinese classical books and records.By bridging the gap between ancient and modern times,this program aimed to build cultural memory and foster a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture among the general public.By applying relevant theories of cultural memory,this study takes the televiosn program China in the Classics as the research object and investigates the dynamic process of construction of cultural memory,characteristics of the process of media practice,and construction values of the program.Lastly,challenges faced by China in the Classics in the process of construction of cultural memory are briefly analyzed and suggestions for constructing cultural memory of future programs of China in the Classics are provided.Besides the introduction part,the study includes five chapters.Chapter One outlines the context of the birth of the cultural television program China in the Classics,focusing primarily on policy orientation,market environment,and cultural crisis.Chapter Two focuses on a comprehensive text analysis of the eleven episodes comprising the first season of the program.Given that television serves as a pivotal platform for disseminating exceptional traditional Chinese culture,and the utilization of presentation techniques and technological advancements in film and television enables the enhancement of cultural content of classical books and records into a collective cultural memory,this chapter aims to scrutinize the dynamic process of formation of cultural memory in China in the Classics by examining the three facets of media,re-media,and public domain presentation.The primary focus of Chapter Three is to examine the characteristics of the cultural memory construction of China in the Classics,delving into three key perspectives,namely,refining the canon’s content,performing ceremonial practices,and facilitating a dialogue between ancient and modern times.This chapter attempts to investigate how China in the Classics could create the audience’s cultural memory by innovating the program’s content and form.In Chapter Four,the author investigates the values of construction of cultural memory in China in the Classics.By analyzing eleven episodes from the first season and corresponding segments of the program,the author identifies four categories of values of construction of cultural memory: cultural and historical value,era value,identity value,and inheritance value.Chapter Five focuses on the reflection of the construction of cultural memory by China in the Classics.The analysis specifically addresses issues pertaining to construction of cultural memory of the program,such as obvious normalization of the program,deviation of popular science content,and lack of awareness of brand development.Additionally,for the construction of cultural memory in the future of the program,this chapter offers suggestions such as adhering to the objective statement of facts,using the way of life narration,periodically awakening memory,and realizing international communication.In summary,the program China in the Classics endeavors to disseminate classical books and records in a contemporary way.It utilizes new media technology to construct a public cultural memory that is relevant to contemporary society.By doing so,classical culture is endowed with new significance in the current era.The program has successfully activated and effectively transmitted social and cultural memory,while also enabling individuals to appreciate the power of cultural inheritance amidst complex and multicultural influences.
