| This study takes the readers of Lin Loon as the research subject.It uses Lin Loon magazine as the textual support,carries out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the composition,topics of concern,life world and reading situation of the readers of Lin Loon magazine based on introducing the research perspective of reading history,and deeply discusses the profound influence of the cultural activity,"reading",on readers.Currently,most of the academic studies on Lin Loon magazine focus on content of the magazine itself,and there are few in-depth interpretations of its readers and their reading activities from the perspective of reading history.In view of this,this study is conducted in this regard to fill the research gap and make a preliminary attempt to develop an interdisciplinary dialogue between library science and disciplines such as women’s studies,sociology and philosophy.First,this study depicts the open and inclusive social features of Shanghai from the late Qing Dynasty to the 1930 s.The diversified cultural environment,the prosperity of feminist ideas,and the shift of women’s consumption concepts all provide a favorable external environment for the creation of the magazine.In the meantime,the magazine’s own column arrangement,editorial team,and marketing methods are the internal conditions for the magazine to attract readers to read.Second,using the statistics of historical materials such as letters from readers published in the "Lin Loon Letterbox" column,this study finds that the readers of Lin Loon are mainly young urban women living in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces,and most of them receive primary education.Furthermore,this study introduces the idea of "digital humanism" and employs digital tools such as Python and Gephi to restore readers’ concerns and life world.The tremendous deviation between the inner desire and the actual situation makes readers suffer from confusion and despair,and they aspire to solve their practical problems through reading activities.Third,this study profoundly analyzes readers’ reading motivation and reading content.After probing into the topics that readers are concerned about and the real-life world,this study applies the theory of "demand and satisfaction",and reveals that readers’ reading activates are motivated by their demands for resistance,knowledge and emotion.Lin Loon magazine provides readers with reading content and satisfies their reading demands and motivations by focusing on two main categories of articles: new knowledge popularization and opinion statement.Finally,this study expounds on the significance of reading.Reading activities make the female group change the state of "losing their voices" in the past,and readers use "reading" as a medium to build a bridge of expression and socialization.Readers of Lin Loon share their reading feelings in the public domain by submitting or writing letters,and thus the "reading community" emerges.Moreover,the knowledge gained by readers through reading activities further deepens women’s modern consciousness.However,there are also some limitations,thus providing lessons and inspirations for the development and promotion of modern women’s reading activities. |
