Diabetes is a chronic non-communicable disease and can cause a variety of complications that threaten the lives of patients. In recent years, the prevalence of diabetes in China has been increasing year after year and has become a serious public health problem. The country has also issued relevant policies, setting new goals and requirements for the prevention and control of diabetes.Media reports on diabetes can improve the public’s awareness of the disease, increase their attention to the disease, and help the public make correct health decisions, and promote the change of behavior.Based on the health belief model, this paper analyzes the content of diabetes coverage on People’s Daily Online and Health Daily from 2013 to 2020.At the same time, the application of HBM in diabetes health intervention measures and the application of HBM in media diabetes reports were discussed. And the paper tried to summary the communication characteristics of diabetes coverage and the problems in the communication process, and propose the strategy of future media coverage based on these problems. The research found that the number of coverage on diabetes issues in the two media was unstable during the year, with the first coverage peak in 2015.The coverage of diabetes mainly come from medical experts and the media, and the officials government and audiences have less power to speak. The format of coverage is very fixed, with pure text being the main focus. And articles within 500 words are the majority of coverage. In addition, more than 90% of coverage use the health belief model. Both media have the highest usage rate of perceived susceptibility and perceived severity, with less use of information related to self-efficacy and perceived benefits.Such information design is not conducive to audiences taking appropriate health measures.Through data analysis, this paper identified three main shortcomings in the media coverage of diabetes-related issues: First, the severity of the disease was overly exaggerated, and the proportion of self-efficacy information was small.Second, early screening information was little reported by the medias and audience has little chance to express their thoughts.Third, the concept of popular science is centered on experts, with a high reading threshold and poor interest. In this regard, the author attempts to propose an optimization strategy for diabetes coverage: First, the terror appeal should be moderate and strengthen the self-efficacy information.Second, strengthen the dissemination of early screening content and build a good dialogue environment. Finally, enrich the form of text dissemination,so that science can be understood in a easy way.
