In 2021,the War in Afghanistan,an international conflict that has last two decades, has come to an end on the eve of the 20th anniversary of 9/11,which makes the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 a high-profile international media event. Therefore, the commemoration reports presented by various countries’ medias have become a significant opportunity to observe the commemoration reports of international disaster events in the context of globalization. In the era of risk globalization, disasters like terrorism are one of the problems that human needs to face together.Rather than seeing this kind of issues from a narrow perspective of one’s own nation and race, reports urgently need to hold a standpoint of a community of shared future for mankind and comply with the requirements of global media ethics. At first, this thesis clarifies the relevant theories and puts forward the concept of disaster commemoration report. Then, taking advantage of the methods like content analysis, comparative analysis and literature research, this thesis analyzes the commemoration reports of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 on Xinhua Net and The New York Times Net from multiple angles. Finally, this thesis proposes some suggestions for improving disaster reports from the perspective of global media ethics. The study finds that the relevant reports of the two medias are large in amount and diverse in content. From a macro perspective,Xinhua Net focuses on assessing the harm of the war and calling for cooperation between countries, which reflects the value of a community of shared future for mankind;nevertheless, with a great deal of self-reflection but few international responsibilities,The New York Times Net tends to analyze the impact of the disaster and talk to American people from a microcosmic perspective.Political background, culture, and media system are the important reasons for the differences mentioned above.Compared with previous serial reports on 9/11,the newly released ones are characterized by more abundant facts and more objective viewpoints. With the containment of news value, ethical value and social value, they have played positive roles in guiding the public to reflect on war consequences, alleviating sectarian violence, calling on international anti-terrorism cooperation and building a harmonious and stable world order. However, there are some problems.Reports of Xinhua Net focus on superficial information and grand narrative, lacking in-depth reports and a more delicate humanistic perspective;while reports of The New York Times Net are scattered on themes, more emotional on narrative and lack of systematic summary and reflection.Based on a community of shared future for mankind and global communication ethics, the study suggests that the medias should adhere to humanistic solicitude, realistic orientation and thought leadership in the reports of similar international news, deepening the public value of the reports. |
