| Mathematical modeling communicates mathematics with the real world,which plays a pivotal role in almost every field of production and life.Mathematical modeling is one of the mathematics core literacy in high school mathematics curriculum standards and is incorporated into the curriculum structure.What’s more,the new college entrance examination propositions are becoming more and more flexible,and mathematical modeling ideas are gradually permeating into the exam questions.Mathematical modeling teaching in high school will greatly improve the students’ awareness of mathematical application and innovation,which will also help them better adapt to the current situation of curriculum reform and to the requirements of social development.The literature analysis method,survey procedure,and quantitative analysis method are used in this paper in order to effectively understand the current situations of high school mathematical modeling and design tailored strategies to target the issues of it.Firstly,we classified the kinds of literature according to the terms of mathematical modeling,mathematical modeling teaching,mathematical modeling competencies and its classification,the development of mathematical modeling teaching,and mathematical modeling teaching strategies.Secondly,we interviewed 20 mathematics teachers in the No.1 High School of Qixia.Lastly,we obtained 335 valid questionnaires from students and distributed mathematical modeling competencies test papers to 197 students to understand their mathematical modeling competencies.Through qualitative and quantitative research of the interviews,questionnaires,and test papers on mathematical modeling,we came to the conclusion that the state of mathematical modeling instruction today is not encouraging and that both teachers and students struggle greatly with the subject.The causes of this are as follows: The school fails to supply necessary hardware.The teachers don’t have enough resources,and they need more modeling training and teaching research.Second,there is only one approach now used to evaluate mathematical modeling teaching.Third,there are also some problems which are related to the teachers.They don’t have a solid grasp of mathematical modeling.Besides,their personal modeling competencies are weak,Therefore,they cannot do well in mathematical modeling teaching,and fail to include mathematical modeling ideas in exams.Fourth,teachers have to face challenges from their students,such as students’ modeling foundations,differences in students’ modeling capabilities in class,and differences in students’ modeling capabilities between grades.Fifth,students are not willing to accept mathematical modeling.They are scared by it and are unable to comprehend how mathematical modeling ideas are applied in exams.It’s difficult for them to remember all phases of mathematical modeling.Based on the current state of the subject in high school,targeted teaching strategies for mathematical modeling are suggested from three perspectives: schools,teachers,and students.There are some suggestions for schools: schools should develop school-based textbooks of mathematical modeling.Besides,schools should pay attention to mathematical modeling training and teaching research.It’s also necessary to improve the educational evaluation system.In terms of teachers,teachers need to first raise the awareness of mathematical modeling.Teachers should also establish an awareness of lifelong learning and improve their mathematical modeling skills and mathematical modeling teaching ability.They should emphasize how mathematical modeling ideas are incorporated into exam questions so that students can understand how important it is.Teachers need to integrate mathematical modeling ideas first while mathematical modeling activities go second then gradually get students become more and more familiar with mathematical modeling activities.It’s also a good idea to train students in mathematical modeling in a variety of methods at various grade levels.They also need to teach mathematical modeling in the class in a hierarchical fashion.When it comes to students,they should get over their fear of mathematical modeling and form a realistic perception of mathematical modeling tests.Besides,they ought to improve their skills in all areas of mathematical modeling.Last but not least,a teaching plan is added as an appendix in order to give front-line teachers some teaching examples on how to use mathematical modeling. |
