The high school language textbooks’ unified version includes vernacular novels that are considered classics of literature. These works offer students a glimpse into the rich landscape, customs, and style of vernacular literature, which helps cultivate their aesthetic power. The unique nature, divinity, allegory, and tragic colors of these novels also improve students’ critical thinking skills.Front-line teachers have conducted in-depth studies on the teaching of vernacular novels, providing reference materials for others. However, given today’s technological revolution, more research is necessary to broaden the teaching horizon of vernacular novels.Scholar William E.Doyle,Jr.proposed the 4R theory of postmodern curriculum view to meet the needs of the rapidly developing information society.Although some language education experts have applied this theory to the teaching of language novels, few scholars have used the 4R theory to research the teaching of the seven vernacular novels in the unified version of high school language textbooks.Macroscopic educational strategies lack practical teaching design cases. Therefore, this paper takes Doyle’s 4R theory as the theoretical perspective and analyzes the characteristics of vernacular novels to explore the teaching strategies and three teaching designs of the unified version of high school vernacular novels under the4 R theory. These findings will provide a basis for front-line teachers’ teaching of vernacular novels. The thesis’ s introduction includes the topic’s origin, significance, research method, innovation point, and literature review. The body consists of four parts.Part I defines the concepts related to the postmodern view of curriculum and4 R theory while also elaborating on vernacular fiction and its characteristics.Part II studies the 4R theory and how it guides the teaching of high school language vernacular novels. This section explores relevant teaching strategies for these novels.Part III designs three teaching plans for high school vernacular novels based on related teaching theories.Part IV reflects on the teaching of vernacular novels under the 4R theory and the instructional design. This section aims to advance research on teaching high school language vernacular novels under the 4R theory.
