Reducing students’ homework burden during compulsory education is one of the breakthrough points in implementing the "double reduction" requirement.This paper uses questionnaires and statistics to analyse the current situation of first-year language homework after the "double reduction" policy and to make relevant suggestions.The innovation of this paper lies in the novelty of the topic chosen and the combination of quantitative and qualitative research based on primary data.The article first explores the concept of language homework design and the basis of national policy.Then analyses the design and implementation of first-year language homework,its completion and effectiveness,as well as teachers’ and students’ evaluations of first-year language homework after the "double reduction" policy,taking into account the questionnaire data.The survey results show that language teachers in Wuhan currently agree with and support the implementation of the "double reduction" policy,focusing on the innovation of the content and form of language homework,the realisation of the function of homework and the cultivation of students’ core literacy,and that students generally value language homework and language subjects.The implementation of the "double reduction" policy has resulted in a reduction in the amount of language homework.At the same time,there are areas for improvement.The overall amount of language homework is still on the high side,teachers’ homework design is not systematic,students’ acceptance of innovative types of homework is limited,and the function of homework has not yet been maximised.In response to the problems that emerged from the survey,the author proposes the following countermeasures.Schools need to encourage and support teachers’ innovation in assignment design by strengthening policy interpretation,training and monitoring.Teachers should build up an overall awareness of homework design,reduce the total amount of homework,innovate the form of homework,and continuously optimise and improve the implementation of homework to promote quality and efficiency in homework design,based on the premise of textbooks and the new curriculum.Students should adjust their mindset,develop an interest in language homework and good habits,and at the same time constantly improve and enhance themselves in response to their own language learning.
