As a positive social behaviour,pro-social behaviour plays an irreplaceable role in the development of an individual’s personality qualities and socialisation.Junior high school students are immature in their physical and mental development and are at a critical stage in the formation and development of pro-social behaviour;therefore it is necessary to pay more attention to junior high school students’ pro-social behaviour.Previous studies have shown that family closeness is an important factor influencing pro-social behaviour,but there is a lack of in-depth exploration of the mechanism of how family closeness affects pro-social behaviour.Based on theories related to pro-social behaviour,this study explores the influence of family closeness on pro-social behaviour among junior high school students,and explores the mediating role of materialism and the moderating role of just world beliefs in order to reveal its mechanism of action and provide reference for the development of effective pro-social behaviour development programmes,which in turn promote the occurrence of pro-social behaviour among junior high school students.This study used the Family Intimacy Scale,the Pro-Social Behaviour Scale,the Materialism Scale and the Just World Beliefs Scale to conduct a questionnaire survey on 1570 junior high school students from three secondary schools in Hainan Province.The data obtained were analysed using SPSS software and the Process macro program for relevant statistics,and the results revealed that:(1)Middle school students’ family closeness had a significant positive predictive effect on pro-social behaviour.(2)Materialism partially mediated the relationship between family closeness and prosocial behaviour among junior high school students.(3)Just world beliefs play a moderating role between family closeness and pro-social behaviour among junior high school students.As a result,the following conclusions were drawn from this study:(1)Family closeness is closely related to pro-social behaviour,and family closeness not only has a direct effect on junior high school students’ pro-social behaviour,but also has an indirect effect through materialism.(2)Just world beliefs moderated the effect of family closeness on pro-social behaviour,and the positive predictive effect of family closeness on pro-social behaviour increased with increasing just world beliefs.The results of this study not only help to better understand the relationship between family closeness and pro-social behaviour of junior high school students from ecosystem theory and social cognitive theory,but also help to guide families and schools to promote pro-social behaviour by enhancing junior high school students’ family closeness and just world beliefs and establishing correct materialism,which is of great significance to the social development of junior high school students.
