The work field and the family field are two very important fields in people’s daily life but many people are confused about how to balance the relationship between the two important fields.On the one hand,people have to invest a lot of time and energy in the work field in order to obtain higher material returns;On the other hand,family tasks have become more complicated due to the aging population social phenomenon and the open two-child policy.It is even more difficult for people who are pursuing higher material returns to balance work and family life.So how to help them balance their work and family life is worthy of further discussion.At the same time,dose the Chinese people’s traditional view "male earn the bread for the family and women do the family affairs"still has an impact on women’s life?It is worthy of further discussion.This research is based on previous research to examines the relationship between materialism and work-family balance and the methods to balance work and family fields to help achieve balance.In order to explore the relationship between materialism,gender and work-family balance,as well as the moderating role of family supportive supervisory behavior,Study I uses the questionnaire to survey 508 respondents on the level of these three variables:materialism,work-family balance,and family-supported supervisory behavior.We find that materialism can predict work-family balance,and the further analysis finds that the family supportive supervisory behavior could moderate the relationship between materialism and work-family balance.In particular,under the condition of highly family-supported supervisory behavior,individuals with high materialist values will experience an increase in work-family balance.Beside the level of work-family balance experienced by men is lower than that of women.Study 2 selected eight employees with a high level of materialism for interviews,using qualitative research methods.The purpose is to explore in depth the influence of materialism and work-family balance.It shows that,first,materialism can promote the relationship between work and family.Second,Family supportive supervisor behavior cannot solve the long-term conflicts between work and family.Third,male’s perception of work-family balance is lower than female.Finally,Based on the above conclusion this article puts forward several suggestions and countermeasures.It is hoped that this suggestion can help employees to balance their work and family life and make life better.
