It is an intrinsic requirement of vocational education to promote the connection between individual students and their future careers and thus help students achieve career competence and development.The external representation of this intrinsic requirement is the graduates’ employment rate,and the core factor affecting the employment rate is the employability of student.Along with the development of high-level and intelligence industrial technology,the upgrading and reshaping of the industrial chain have led to changes in the division of labor in occupations.Even the technical and skilled requirements for the same occupational position are changing,the contradiction between the supplement of talents in vocational colleges and the demand of society intensified.At the same time,because of the global COVID epidemic and the counter-globalization economic policies in some countries,enterprises faced an increase of the survival pressure,this makes the initial employment and re-employment of higher vocational college students more difficult,and improving students’ employability is the key to solve this problem.In view of this,the grounded theory in qualitative research method is chosen.The study constructs a theoretical model for the employability of higher vocational college students based on the perspective of market demand,and then analyzes its cultivation strategy in order to provide theoretical reference for the cultivation and improvement of higher vocational college students’ employability.This study conducted a stepwise coding analysis and theoretical saturation test on550 higher vocational college job postings and the interview content with 20 higher vocational college students who have graduated.Finally,91 initial concepts,31 initial categories,6 main categories,and 2 core categories were extracted.Among them,the main categories are professional quality,work ability,job-hunting ability,social adaptability,professional development potentiality and inner qualities,and the core categories are explicit employability and implicit employability.Based on that,the theoretical model of employability of higher vocational college students is constructed.Explicit employability includes professional quality,work ability and job-hunting ability.Implicit employability includes social adaptability,professional development potential and inner qualities.The relationship between these two parts is a unified relationship that promotes and assists each other,rather than being independent of each other,among them,the implicit employability is the cornerstone of the whole employability development,which needs more attention and importance.Based on the theoretical model and research data,five strategies for cultivating the employability of higher vocational college students are put forward: firstly,constructing a talent cultivation model based on the elements of employability;secondly,strengthening the construction of high-quality vocational education characteristic courses;thirdly,giving full play to the employability cultivation role of practical teaching;fourthly,building a high-quality employment service system in higher vocational colleges;lastly,guiding students to pay attention to the improvement of their inner qualities and the cultivation of implicit employability.
