Learning engagement refers to a positive, fulfilling and long-lasting emotional and cognitive state that an individual has during the learning process.Based on the ecosystem theory, learning engagement is the result of the interaction between individuals and their environment, and learning engagement is influenced not only by the individual’s own factors, but also by family and school factors. Therefore,in this study,931 junior high school students(459 boys;472 girls)in Guangdong Province, with an average age of 13.6±1.1 years, were used to examine the relationship between parental academic involvement and junior high school students’ learning engagement,as well as the relationship between personal growth initiative and classroom climate, using the Parental Academic Involvement Questionnaire, the Learning Engagement Questionnaire, the Personal Growth Initiative Questionnaire and the Classroom Climate Questionnaire. The underlying mechanisms of the role of these two factors in the relationship between parental academic involvement and junior high school students’ engagement in learning. The results of the study show that:(1)Parental academic involvement is at a moderate to high level, with an overall mean score of 3.60,which is slightly above the mean.Junior high school students’ engagement in learning was moderately high, with a mean total score of 4.57,slightly above the mean.(2)There is a significant positive correlation between parental academic involvement and junior high school students’ commitment to learning,a significant positive correlation between parental academic involvement and personal growth initiative, and a significant positive correlation between personal growth initiative and junior high school students’ commitment to learning.(3)Parental academic involvement not only directly predicts learning engagement, but also influences learning engagement through personal growth initiative, which mediates the relationship between parental academic involvement and junior high school students’ learning engagement.(4)Classroom climate enhances the positive relationship between parental academic involvement and learning engagement, and classroom climate positively moderates the relationship between parental academic involvement and learning engagement.(5)Classroom climate enhances the positive relationship between personal growth initiative and learning engagement, and classroom climate positively moderates the relationship between personal growth initiative and learning engagement. The findings of this study suggest that personal growth initiative is the mediating mechanism through which parental academic involvement affects junior high school students’ learning engagement, and class climate plays a moderating role. This suggests that parents should be actively involved in their students’ academics, students should improve their personal growth initiative skills, and schools and teachers should establish a good classroom climate in order to enhance junior high school students’ learning engagement during their academic careers.
