As an important part of China’s postgraduate education and the reserve force of national high-level academic innovators, academic postgraduate students play an important social role.Under the background of social transformation, the problem of role imbalance of academic postgraduates is of increasing severity. On one hand, for academic postgraduates, correct role cognition and successful role play helps building positive self-assessment and self-cognition.It benefits for their study and personal development;on the other hand,it helps examining the relative factors, such as the system of postgraduates education, the social environment and so on,thus leading to a successful role play of postgraduates themselves and the high-lever development of the postgraduate education. Therefore, this study adopts a qualitative research method, focusing on individual micro-level role experiences and feelings, and combines participant observation with semi-structured in-depth interviews and observations of academic postgraduates,in an attempt to answer the following questions: For contemporary academic postgraduates, what’s the core role? What’s the “ideal” role practice for them in school field? What are the underlying causes of the dysfunctional roles of academic postgraduates? How to adjust the role? This study firstly finds the policy, legal and ideological basis in the historical development of China’s postgraduate education, the series of national and university documents on the cultivation and management of academic postgraduates. The role of academic postgraduates is clarified from two dimensions of role orientation and role quality academic role. The study found that academic postgraduates have role disorders such as role confusion, role conflict and role misalignment in the process of academic role playing.Role ambiguity is manifested by the problem of poor transition between old and new roles;role conflict is manifested by the intra-role conflict between individual’s ideal role expectation and real role perception, and the conflict between multiple roles;role mismatch is manifested by the disconnection between individual’s academic role performance and academic role preparation in the background. In this study,we found that the role-playing of academic postgraduates cannot be separated from the joint shaping of social structure and university organization, among which, the weakening of the symbolic function of diploma caused by the expansion of master’s degree leads to the expectation gap between society and role-playing individuals on the role of academic postgraduates;the disconnect between market demand and talent supply leads to the negative role identity of academic postgraduates. On the other hand, the heterogeneity between undergraduate and graduate education affects the learning, adaptation and role playing of academic postgraduates. At the same time, the endogenous factors such as utilitarianism and blindness of role pursuit, passivity and falsity of role play influence and restrict the positive cognition, positive emotion and normative behavior of individuals. Finally, this study focuses on individual role adjustment of academic postgraduates, and proposes corresponding suggestions and countermeasures from two paths: structural optimization support and individual subjective adjustment.Three suggestions for structural optimization are proposed: Firstly, improve the educational system.Secondly, enhance the articulation of master’s education.Thirdly, strengthen the relationship of rights and responsibilities between supervisors and students,so as to provide good support and guarantee for individual role adjustment.Meanwhile,as the key subjects of role-playing,individuals should take the initiative to strengthen the awareness of serving the country, academic research and academic ethics;consciously cultivate the role qualities of truth-seeking and practicality and independent personality;and actively study to enhance the knowledge, ability and psychological quality of their roles. |
