Children in difficult circumstances have always been a major concern for the state and society, and the children’s peer group also plays an important role in the children’s development.Children in difficult circumstances often encounter problems such as fear of interaction and low peer acceptance in their peer relationships due to a variety of negative factors around them, which can have a negative impact on the socialisation process of children in difficult circumstances and hinder their healthy growth.Improving the peer relationships of children in difficult circumstances can promote good social interaction, which is beneficial to their physical and psychological development and enhances their social adjustment ability, thus enabling them to better integrate into society. This study first conducted a survey and interview on the peer relationships of children in distress in Nanjing’s M community to effectively assess their needs, and then, from the perspective of alleviating the fear of peer interaction and improving peer acceptance of children in distress, combined with the "mirror me" theory, group work interventions were used to improve children’s imagination about how others perceive them, their imagination about how others evaluate them, and their emotions towards these perceptions or evaluations.Eight group activities were carried out to improve the peer relationships of children in distress, including: Getting to know each other,Getting to know oneself,Starting with confidence,Making friends with courage,Charming cooperation show,Communication skills class,Conflict mediation room, and Children enjoying the future. This study found that the peer relationships of children in distress were improved on the dimensions of fear of interaction and peer acceptance, that the methods and techniques of group work were compatible with the needs of improving the peer relationships of children in distress, and that the intervention of group work methods was effective in improving the peer relationships of children in distress. This paper provides some ideas and methods to promote the improvement of peer relationships for children in difficult circumstances, and provides some experiences and references for the development of work with children in difficult circumstances.
