Social adaptation means that individuals take the initiative to adapt, regulate and change their social environment in order to achieve harmony between themselves and society. The physical and psychological development of high school students at the end of adolescence has not yet reached full maturity, and as this is a period of transition to society, high school students may have a variety of adaptation problems. As the future and hope of their country, their ability to adapt well to society has a bearing on both their personal future and the development of society as a whole. In the 21st century, which is full of opportunities and challenges, social adaptation is one of the essential qualities of young people today. Therefore,in order to understand the current development of social adaptation of high school students, this study introduces two variables, namely, core self-evaluation and sense of hope,to investigate the relationship between these two variables and social adaptation of high school students and their mechanisms of action, and on this basis, proposes corresponding educational countermeasures to improve core self-evaluation,sense of hope and social adaptation of high school students,so as to protect the healthy growth of high school students. In this study,890 high school students from three secondary schools in the Cangzhou area were used to conduct a questionnaire survey using the Core Self-Assessment Scale for Secondary School Students, the Hope Scale for Secondary School Students and the Social Adaptation Scale for Secondary School Students,of which 834 were valid questionnaires. After the recall was completed, data analysis was conducted using SPSS 21.0,and then the mediation test was conducted through the Process plug-in of SPSS 21.0 to further clarify the relationship between the three. The results of the study were as follows:(1)The core self-evaluation of high school students is at a moderate to low level.Analysis of demographic variables reveals significant differences in core self-evaluation levels by gender, grade level, whether or not the student is an only child, family location, family economic situation and family climate.(2)The sense of hope of high school students and its sub-dimensions are at a moderate to high level.Analysis of the demographic variables reveals significant differences in levels of hopefulness in terms of gender, whether or not they are class officers, family location, family economic situation and family climate.(3)The total social adaptation dimension and the psychological dominance, interpersonal adaptation and psychological resilience sub-dimensions of high school students are all at the upper middle level, while the psychological energy sub-dimension is at the lower middle level.Analysis of the demographic variables reveals significant differences in social adaptation in terms of gender, whether or not they are class leaders, family economic situation and family climate.(4)Both high school students’ core self-evaluation and sense of hope were significantly and positively related to social adaptation;high school students’ core self-evaluation was significantly and positively related to sense of hope.(5)Both high school students’ core self-evaluation and sense of hope are positive predictors of social adaptation;high school students’ core self-evaluation is a positive predictor of sense of hope.(6)Sense of hope acts as a partial mediator between high school students’ core selfassessment and social adaptation.Based on the findings of the above study, the following educational responses are proposed.(1)Schools should emphasise mental health education programmes and frustration education, with a focus on the lower grades to enhance students’ psychological energy.(2)Teachers should be sensitive to the gender differences of their students, implement democratic management and be good at encouraging them.(3)Parents should pay attention to psychological care for their children, create a good family atmosphere and educate them positively.(4)Students themselves must evaluate themselves objectively, set reasonable goals and participate actively in all activities.(5)The relevant departments regularly organise various activities suitable for high school students, clean up the online environment and adhere to the integration of urban and rural development.
