A country’s image is an important part of a country’s soft power.A good national image can not only enhance the country’s reputation and international status in the world, but also has great strategic significance for safeguarding national security and enhancing national cohesion.Textbooks play a very important role in disseminating and constructing the image of a country.Analyzing the national image in textbooks is helpful to examine and grasp the actual role of textbooks in the dissemination and construction of national images, and better play the educational function of textbooks.Since 2017,the compulsory education textbooks compiled by the Ministry of Education(referred to as the unified version of the textbook)have been gradually promoted and used in primary and secondary schools across the country. What kind of image of the Chinese state is created in the unified version of the primary school Chinese textbook? This question has not received sufficient attention and needs to be answered through empirical research. This study begins with the question "What kind of image of the Chinese nation is created in the unified version of the primary school Chinese textbook?" "In order to conduct the overall research problem,an analytical framework for the national image, including political image, natural image, cultural image, and national image, was established by referring to the existing relevant literature and combining the reality of the unified version of the primary school Chinese textbook. After analyzing the texts related to the national image in the textbook by using the content analysis method, this study reveals the image of China presented in the unified version of primary school Chinese textbooks from the aspects of frequency, content and value. The study found that:First, there are differences in the number of national images and the grade distribution of some images. In terms of quantity, the 254 texts in the unified version of primary school Chinese textbooks involved a total of 333 national images,of which the most Chinese images were the most, with a total of 152,accounting for 45.6% of the total national images appearing in the textbooks.Natural images followed, with 94,accounting for 28.2% of the total number of national images appearing in textbooks; There are 68 national images, accounting for 20.4% of the total number of national images appearing in textbooks; The political image appears the least in the textbooks, with a total of 19,accounting for 5.7% of the total image of the country that appears in the textbooks, while the image of the modern political system, international relations, and cross-strait relations is not presented in the textbooks. From the perspective of grade distribution, the political image in the lower grade textbooks is mainly the image of political relations, and the image of political war begins to appear in the textbooks of the fourth grade, while the image of the political system is not involved until the sixth grade; The cultural image in the lower grade textbooks is mainly the image of ideological education and traditional culture, and the image of the humanistic landscape, the image of artistic works and the image of scientific and technological achievements began to appear in the textbooks of the third grade, the image of scientific and technological achievements only appeared in the third and fourth grades, and the image of folk customs and customs was involved except for the second and fifth grades; In the natural image, the seasonal meteorological image runs through the six grades, and the number of occurrences in the lower grade textbooks is significantly higher than that of the upper grade, and the image of mountains and rivers is basically evenly distributed in all grades since the appearance of the second grade. In the national image, the individual national image and the group national image have always run through the six grades, among which the number of individual national images appearing in the upper grade textbooks is significantly higher than that in the lower grades, and the group national image is most involved in the fourth grade textbooks.Secondly, the image of China’s national image constructed by the unified compilation of primary school Chinese textbooks is diverse, rich in content and three-dimensional.the image of the brutal ancient political system in the compilation of primary school language textbooks;the image of a modern political system that benefits the people;images of ancient political warfare with frequent wars;the image of modern political warfare with brutal fighting;the image of modern political warfare with the sinister battlefield;image of unity and harmony in ethnic relations;Colorful images of folk customs and customs;positive ideological education image;the image of the historical human landscape;ingenious images of works of art;Profound traditional cultural image;Great image of scientific and technological achievements; The four seasons are distinct, and the mountains and rivers are magnificent natural images;the image of an ancient individual national who is intelligent and witty, worried about state affairs, and seeking truth from facts;the image of an individual national in modern times who cares for the people and is not afraid of sacrifice;the image of a modern individual national with heart-to-heart and selfless dedication to the masses of the people;the image of scientific and technological workers with courage and perseverance;the image of a hardworking and simple worker; The image of parents who love their children and give selflessly;the image of a curious, intelligent and innocent child who is curious about the world;image of friendly ethnic minorities;the image of a soldier who is not afraid of hardship and has a tenacious fighting spirit;the image of rural people who work hard and love a better life;the image of the ancient ruler who abandoned the people and was corrupt and weak;It is a teacher who teaches students to seek truth from facts and familiarize himself with the teaching method of reading and memorizing. The image of the country created in the textbook involves more than a dozen dimensions, spanning ancient, modern and modern times in time, covering a wide range of content. Finally, the images presented in the primary school Chinese textbooks are mainly positive, but also contain a small number of negative images. The positive image in the textbook focuses on the cultural image, the national image; The negative image is mainly reflected in the image of the ancient political system in the political image and the image of the ancient ruler in the national image; The natural image is mainly the objective image.Based on the above research conclusions, this study puts forward suggestions from two perspectives: on the one hand,in the preparation of teaching materials,it enhances the three-dimensional nature of national image shaping by improving the geographical balance of national image, the diversity of citizens, dealing with the relationship between positive and negative imagesand the epochality of content; On the other hand,in the implementation of the curriculum, students should be the main body, and at the same time give play to the guiding role of teachers.
