Research On College Students’ Public Service Motivation

Public Service Motivation,as a kind of motivation that focuses on spiritual values and reflects the altruistic nature of dedication and non-selfishness,has a theoretical connotation that is consistent with the public sector’s value orientation of serving the public interest and the value orientation of socialist values with Chinese characteristics.The recruitment of college students is the main means and an important measure to improve the personnel system of our government departments and their administrative standards.At the same time,college students as the major force in the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and comprehensive social development,understanding the current situation of Public Service Motivation among college students and its influencing factors will not only enable us to take targeted measures to improve the level of public relations awareness and Public Service Motivation among college students,but also provide a scientific basis for selecting college students with high level of Public Service Motivation in order to achieve higher standards.The study was conducted with a group of college students from nine different categories of undergraduate universities in Hebei Province,and was measured by drawing on Perry’s Public Service Motivation Scale,which contains four dimensions :attractiveness to public policy making,commitment to public interest,compassion,and self-sacrifice.Using Likert 5-point scoring to represent the options.Information on the demographic characteristics of different individuals is used to discuss the discrepancy of Public Service Motivation under the effect of different individual attributes,and whether the effect of organizational and sociocultural environment variables will affect the overall level of Public Service Motivation of the college students.The data analysis methods of t-test,one-way ANOVA,correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were used to derive the research results.Taking Public Service Motivation as the dependent variable and organizational environment and sociocultural environment as the independent variables,a research model on the influencing factors of college students ’ Public Service Motivation was constructed and research hypotheses were put forward.The collected data were processed and analyzed by SPSS.The descriptive statistical analysis revealed that college students performed well overall in term of their Public Service Motivation.The results of the t-test and one way ANOVA indicated that individual characteristics such as gender,age and major showed different levels of Public Service Motivation,while the samples of individuals with enlistment experience,internship or part-time work experience,and volunteering experience do not show significant differences.The linear regression analysis showed that the degree of attaching importance to the ideological and moral education of children within the family,the degree of attaching importance to the construction of spiritual civilization in campus,the degree of rapport among classmates,the degree of knowledge of the development of modern Chinese history and history of the Communist Party of China,and the degree of loving and concerning for entertainment culture had a positive impact on the college students ’ Public Service Motivation.Finally,according to the results of the data analysis,the paper proposes countermeasures based on the current level of college students ’ Public Service Motivation from two aspects: how to effectively improve the level of Public Service Motivation of college students,and how to effectively apply the issue of Public Service Motivation of college students to practical life.
