The report, based on Chinese translation examples of the first five chapters of maritime text Advisory on Decarbonization Applications for Power Generation and Propulsion Systems, explores the specific application of translation compensation theory in the Chinese translation of maritime texts from lexical, grammatical and textual levels within the framework of translation compensation theory. The report aims to explore the effective methods to compensate and reduce the translation losses in the Chinese translation of maritime texts, making the target language readers obtain the similar reading experience as the source language readers. At the lexical level, amplification, specification and generalization can be used to make the translation more consistent with the expression habits of the target language. At the grammatical level, considering that the passive voice and long sentences are often used in English, while the active voice and short sentences are used in Chinese, the change of the voices and division are adopted in translation compensation to make the translation more fluent. At the textual level, the logical relationship can be judged by the context, and can be supplemented in translation to make the logical relationship clearer and the discourse more coherent.Based on the translation practice, translation compensation theory is found to provide guidance for the Chinese translation of maritime texts. The corresponding translation methods at different levels are summarized in the hope of offering useful reference for the translation practice of maritime texts in the future. |
