Report On The Translation Of A Maritime Law Case Text

With the expansion of China's “opening up” process, marine rights and interests have become increasingly important. Maritime Law has become a focus of attention in China's academic circle. In contrast, the development of Maritime Law lagged behind European countries and the United States, thus study and research into Maritime Law, especially British Maritime Law, has become an important task for translators and legal professionals.This report is based on a source text from Lloyd's maritime case law reports. In May 2014,this case was presided over by Justice Andrew Smith of the commercial court of the Queen's Bench Division(QBD). The case text records the whole process of the trial. The compilation style of the case text is: the title; the outline; the focus of the dispute; the judge's judgment and the reasons.The case text represents the basic characteristics of British Maritime Law cases, which has a certain intrinsic academic and research value. In order to guarantee the high quality and rigorous academic translation requirements of this report, the writer consults several experts and scholars for opinions and suggestions, and performs many sequential corrections. After the tutor examines and verifies the target text and the report several times, finally the report text is determined.Based on the author's supervisor-verified translation of the case text, the author carries out a preliminary translation study about the British maritime law case from the aspects of syntactic and lexical structure. Explication of the translation and writing process is intended to help legal workers achieve preliminary understanding of maritime law cases; to understand the phraseology of maritime law cases and explore general rules of maritime law case translation to inform best translation practice.
