This translation report is based on the content of Chapter 3 of the book Response Strategies for Oil Spills in the U.S.Arctic Marine Environment.Considering the objectiveness, conciseness and other stylistic features of the maritime text, the translation should strive for accuracy and retain stylistic style of the original text, while in the translation process, the author finds out that different degrees of loss are inevitable in the maritime text due to linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English, mainly at the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. Therefore, the author intends to select some typical cases from the translation material to summarize specific and feasible means of translation compensation for the maritime text through case analysis, with the translation compensation theory as a general guide. In this translation practice, the author categorizes the losses at the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels in the bilingual conversion, and adopts the corresponding translation methods to compensate for the text itself, including compensation methods at the lexical level—concretization, generalization, amplification and substitution;compensation methods at the syntactic level—static to dynamic, passive to active, splitting and reconstitution;and the compensation methods at the discourse level—information reproduction and supplement, sentence meaning combination, cohesion transformation, and aesthetic compensation,so as to improve the translation from three different perspectives—vocabulary, syntax, and discourse, and achieve the effect of accurate expression, logical coherence, and functional equivalence. The translation practice shows that there are different types of text losses in the translation of maritime English texts, and the translation compensation theory can make up for various text losses and improve the translation quality to a certain extent.
