This translation practice report is based on the E-C translation of Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 of Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age,taking cohesive devices as the research target, and summarizes translation methods and draws conclusions by analyzing specific translation examples. The lost ancient cities have important enlightenment to the existence of modern cities and leads people to think about urban development. This book reproduces history and looks forward to the future. As an informative text, the selected text has formal words, clear logic, compact structural and strong textual coherence. Therefore, how to present the cohesive and logical relationship of the original text in the translation and how to reflect the coherence of the text are the difficulties in this translation practice.Combined with the characteristics of the text, the translator will focus on grammatical cohesion, mainly including conjunction, substitution and ellipsis.Due to the differences in thinking and logical expression between English and Chinese, the translator selects the Translation Compensation Theory proposed by Xia Tingde according to the characteristics of translation materials, and focuses on the information transmission function of the original text, reducing the translation loss and maximizes the purpose of translation. In the process of translation, four translation methods are mainly used, including omission, addition, division and repetition. In addition, the translator summarizes implication in the course of the translation hoping to enlighten and inspire future translators who encounter the problem of cohesive devices. At the same time,it also hopes to provide some references for those who are interested in English-Chinese translation practice.
