A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Nouns In Maritime Management Literature

Examples in this translation practice report are picked from two recently published papers in the field of maritime management.Their words have the characteristics of maritime English,with many professional terms,complex vocabulary and a large number of nouns.The translation study of this text not only provides reference for the development of China’s maritime industry,but also is of great significance to promote international maritime exchanges.Because English language is abstract,how to translate static and abstract nouns in English into authentic Chinese is a big problem.Catford,who first put forward the concept of "Translation Shift" and studied the translation shift phenomenon at the micro level below the sentence,provides a solution to this problem.Under the guidance of the theory,this practice report puts forward three translation methods of nouns,namely conversion,which includes converting nouns into verbs and adjectives,etc.;addition,which includes the addition of category words and the concretization of abstract nouns;and translating nouns into four-character idiom.It is expected that the report provides reference for the translation practice guided by Catford’s translation theory.
