| This report draws on Halliday and Hasan’s “Cohesion and Coherence Theory”,Hu Zhuanglin’s research on context, and Wang Dongfeng’s research framework of“Coherence and Translation” and then puts forward the five-dimensional framework of Coherence Theory: stylistic coherence, grammatical coherence, semantic coherence, situational coherence, and cultural coherence, which can provide an insight into both human translation and machine translation.Under this theoretical framework, the translator completes the English-Chinese translation of Winston Churchill’s War Leadership and the study of this report. This report consists of five chapters: introduction, translation process, theoretical framework, case study, and conclusion. In the fourth chapter, the core of this report, under the five-dimensional framework of Coherence Theory, the translator analyzes and categorizes typical coherence problems which need to be solved in translation by comparing human translation with machine translation. After that, the translator summarizes five aspects of coherence problems in machine translation and puts forward suggestions for improvement.Throughout the process of analysis, the translator focuses on two issues: combining Coherence Theory with specific methods to solve specific translation problems;distinguishing five aspects of coherence in the text and analyzing them separately. The innovations of this report are as follows: firstly, the report integrates several representative coherence theories into a multi-dimensional framework of Coherence Theory for translation;secondly, from the perspective of Coherence Theory, the report makes a comparative study of human translation and machine translation;thirdly, the report discusses stylistic coherence in translation from the perspective of genres;fourthly, the report points out that supplement,an important aspect in the reconstruction of grammatical coherence,is the increase of syntactic components and information and that ellipsis is the decrease of syntactic components and information. |
