As the largest and most populous nation in South America,Brazil enjoys not only exceptional natural advantages,but also vast cultural reserves.China is now Brazil’s most important trading partner and investor.Introducing the natural environments and historical development of Brazil will contribute to cultural exchanges between China and Brazil,thereby enhancing bilateral cooperation.This report is about E-C translation and the material excerpts from Brazil and Her People of To-day by Nevin Otto Winter.In this tourism text,the author gives a detailed introduction to the history,politics,geography,agriculture,economy,population,and education of Brazil in the early 20 th century,providing a comprehensive and true reference for the world to study Brazil.The two main stages of translation are comprehension and expression.However,accurate comprehensions result from the translator’s coherent interpretation of the source text,whereas fluent expressions require the translator to reconstruct coherence in translation.Coherence is of great importance to the translator’s interpretation of the source text and the generation of the target text.Through analysis,the translator discovers that the source text employs different cohesion methods involving grammar,tenses,word order,and vocabulary.It is the effective use of these cohesion methods that ensures the source text’s coherence.Therefore,in order to make a coherent target text,the translator must analyze the cohesion methods in the source text and transform these methods in the target text in accordance with the Chinese language characteristics.To comprehensively and systematically interpret the source text and produce a coherent target text,the translator uses Wang Dongfeng’s three dimensions of coherence:grammatical coherence,semantic coherence,and pragmatic coherence,to analyze the cohesion methods.Grammatical coherence dimension discusses grammatical cohesion methods,tense chain,and word order;semantic coherence dimension analyzes immediate tie and remote time,as well as the creation of reiteration and collocation;pragmatic coherence dimension mainly focuses on the recognition and processing methods of implicature and cultural default.
