The Reproduction Of Coherence In English Academic Texts

This report translates and analyzes the text from sections 3 to 5,Chapter 4,Chapter 5 and Section 1,Chapter 6 of South Korea under Compressed Modernity,aiming at reproducing the coherence of the source text in the translation.The source text is an academic text with more argumentation,specialized vocabulary,complex sentence structure as well as various intra-and inter-sentence logical relations and coherent discourse.However,in order to achieve the coherence in the translation,it is necessary to consider more factors to deal with the translation.Therefore,the author analyzes the case by focusing on achieving the goal of coherence,in order to accurately convey the information of the original text to the readers while taking into account the rigorous style of the academic text.According to the translation problems encountered in the process of reproducing coherence,the author analyzes how to reproduce the coherence of the original text in the translation from logical,grammatical and pragmatic coherence.For the reproduction of logical coherence,the author analyzes from three aspects: causal,adversative and conditional relations;what’s more,the reproduction of grammatical coherence is analyzed from two aspects: reference and conjunction;and the reproduction of pragmatic coherence is analyzed from linguistic context.The author also adopts techniques such as addition and change word order to achieve logical coherence,conversion of part of speech and imitation to obtain grammatical coherence,and extension to gain pragmatic coherence,so as to maximize the reproduction of coherence in the translation.The translation practice and the writing of the report make the author learn a lot and gain a deeper understanding of reproducing coherence in translation.It is also hoped to take this opportunity to provide reference for analyzing coherence in English academic texts in the future.
