On The Coherence Reconstruction In The Chinese Translation Of English Popular Science Texts

This report is based on the translation practice of the first two chapters of The Chemistry of Food.It focuses on summarizing and documenting the problems encountered in the translation process.The book is a popular science book on the components in food.The first chapter provides a general overview of food,while the second chapter focuses on protein and its composition.This is a popular science book,an illustrative book with lots of information and terminology.This report is mainly based on Skopos Theory,discussing how to realize the coherence of popular science texts from grammar,semantics and style of the text.At the grammatical level,it analyzes how to achieve coherence in translation mainly by using omission and reference;at the semantic level,it explores how to achieve coherence from the inter-word and inter-sentence aspects;at the stylistic level,it explores how to achieve coherence by transition words and paragraphs.This report employs many translation skills and methods to maximally realize the coherence of the translation to solve the problems above.Because of the differences of the words,sentences,pragmatics and logic of the Chinese and English languages,the coherence of the translation is vitally important.The key issue of this report is how to make a reasonable translation of the source language text based on the coherence theory,so as to guarantee the fluent reading of the readers and the effectiveness of the information transmission of the target text.This translation practice report is of great help to the translator in his future translation work,and also provides a reference for the translation and research of similar texts.
