When dealing with interpretating, one would inevitably change the form of the original,be it word order or sentence structures, while staying true to the message intended by the speaker. Therefore, reformulation stands out as an important strategy and should be internalized as the built-in second nature of interpreters.Inspired by research work on this topic by scholars from home and abroad, the author of this thesis mainly focuses on reformulation techniques in Chinese-to-English consecutive interpreting by examining how they were tested out in an exercise of a mock conference and exploring into possible methods for future improvement.First, the author reviews the definition and classification of reformulation and discusses its importance in ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting.Shedding light on the characteristics and challenges in the case study titled “Challenges and Innovation in Deepening Healthcare Reform”,the author presents successful reformulations followed by unsuccessful ones, each with examples to illustrate the author’s assessment and reasoning. In particular, much ink is spent on the vulnerabilities commonly found with student interpreters handling similar tasks, such as failure to omit insignificant information, missing of clear logic and lack of cultural references, among others. Finally, the author suggests possible coping strategies with a view to improving reformulation techniques for future tasks, including retelling practice, global comprehension and interpretation reviewing.
