Impromptu speeches as a common speech mode are frequently used in international conferences, panel discussions, interviews and other events.Impromptu speakers deliver their speeches without reading from written texts. As a result, their speeches are often characterized by redundant information, incomplete sentences and unclear logic, which bring challenges to interpreters. This thesis is a practice report based on the author’s experience interpreting for“How we define women” Forum. The forum invites women from different cultural backgrounds to share their stories and thoughts. The participants represent more than10 countries. In this practice report, the author studies four impromptu speeches and the group discussion as well as her own interpreting at the forum and puts forward specific coping strategies under the guidance of reformulation for impromptu speeches. The author finds that for redundancy in impromptu speeches, interpreters can use omission and summarization to reduce repetitive words and fillers to make the interpretation succinct. For incomplete sentences, interpreters can add the missing part based on the context and double-check with the speaker. When it comes to ambiguous logic,it is important to make explanation or add a subtopic sentence to make the speech logically coherent and explicit. In addition, when faced with notions, cultural and institutional references, interpreters can make a simple explanation to make the meaning clear and avoid potential confusion.
