The main task of an interpreter is to convey information across language barriers, rather than simply making language equivalence.Due to the differences between the two languages and cultures, the most important ability of an interpreter is reformulation.Impromptu speech,a common type of speech before which the speaker does not prepare written texts, often brings challenges to the interpreter because it is highly colloquial,so reformulation in consecutive interpreting of impromptu speeches is even more required. In interpreting, reformulation refers to adjusting the wording of the source language only to better convey the meaning as faithfully as possible on the premise that literal translation cannot accurately convey information.Based on the mock conference “Urbanization: Global Trends and Issues in China”,this thesis focuses on Chinese-English consecutive interpreting and discusses effective reformulation for impromptu speeches in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.Based on previous studies, the author starts with the definition and classification of reformulation and its importance in the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting of impromptu speeches. Then the article analyzes the successful and failed examples of reformulating.Four problems caused by failed practices include redundancy, lack of explanation of cultural concepts, disordered structure, and logical confusion, for which reasons are respectively repeated notes, insufficient preparation, improper classification of information, and insufficient analysis during listening.Afterward, the author concludes with four solutions including simplification, explaining, classifying information, and making logic explicit. Finally, the author proposes three ways to better apply reformulation:(a)allocating more efforts to listening and analyzing;(b)making good use of the time lag during consecutive interpreting;(c)making sufficient preparations before interpreting.
