With the rapid development of Internet technology and the construction of the learning society, massive online open courses(MOOCs)have become hotspot in international education.Online learning participants from all over the world can create, research, and share open educational resources.Interpreting plays an indispensable role in international educational exchanges.Consecutive interpreting is widely used because of its efficient and accurate transmission of information.Interpreters need to edit information in their mind to optimize and reorganize the source information. This report is based on an English-Chinese simulated consecutive interpreting practice in the case of an online open course from Coursera entitled Finding Purpose and Meaning in Life: Living for What Matters Most, given by Professor Vic Strecher of Schools of Public Health and Medicine at the University of Michigan. It is in line with the current young people’s psychology, and language features are distinctive and easy to analyze. The course involves certain philosophical terms and cultural background knowledge, which has high requirements for the interpreter’s interpreting ability and knowledge reserve in related fields. The excerpt is about 60 minutes long, mainly discussing how to be purposeful and how purpose works in real life.In this report, the interpreter elaborates the features and difficulties of the task and the application of information reformulation strategies in the specific practice. The interpreter analyzes both successful examples and problems caused by inefficient practices.Efficient practices include simplification, omission, structural adjustment, and addition. Then the interpreter concludes three types of difficulties, including information redundancy, logical confusion, and information ambiguity.Given the reasons, the interpreter provides three solutions: information compression, logic reconstruction, and meaning interpretation.Through this interpreting practice, the interpreter accumulates specific applications of information reformulation strategies. It is hoped that the report would guide the interpreter’s further learning, and provide reference for other interpreters. |
