Richard Diebenkorn is a famous abstract painter in contemporary America.Beginning with abstraction,his painting style transitioned to figuration before returning to abstract representation.During the geometric abstract period of his artistic career,Diebenkorn produced more than a hundred of paintings,entitled The Ocean Park Series.This series of paintings are mostly based on natural landscapes,presenting from picture layout,spatial construction,and material expression.They also blend Diebenkorn’s more than 20-year experience in exploring the transition between abstraction and figuration in art field,which embodies the painter’s understanding and expression of natural space and abstract painting.His expression and investigation into the painting structure and production in terms of abstract painting have a positive effect on the growth of American regional painting and the expansion of the diversity of abstract painting art,and have had a profound influence on the postmodernist art.This paper analyzes the background of the creation and the formal origin of Richard Diebenkorn’s The Ocean Park Series to tease out the causes of the painting styles of The Ocean Park Series.Secondly,starting from abstract visual symbols and the representation of the picture,the author explores the artistic characteristics of the abstract painting language of The Ocean Park Series.Finally,it discusses the insights the author gained from studying the linguistic way of paintings of The Ocean Park Series and the ideas it inspired in the author’s graduation project. |
