A Report On The Translation Of China-Themed News In The Economist

This translation practice report is based on the English-Chinese news translation of The Economist.The author selects 15 articles on relevant topics in China,mainly covering the economy,celebrity obituaries,infrastructure,and other aspects.On the one hand,The Economist represents the timeliness and objectivity of news;on the other hand,they are highly professional.This report mainly focuses on the news closely related to Chinese economic development,showing China from the perspective of globalization to readers,and expanding the cross-cultural communication vision of domestic readers.In order to improve the reading experience of target readers,the report takes communicative translation theory as framework and applies it to the practice of news translation.Under the guidance of communicative theory,the translator makes an analysis from three levels: words,sentences,and texts.At the lexical level,literal translation and free translation are adopted to realize the effective transmission and creative expression of word meaning;At the syntactical level,the long and difficult sentences and obscure parts are reorganized by means of linear translation,reverse translation,and splitting translation,so as to make the target text more fluent and understandable;At the textual level,by strengthening the expression of conjunctions,clarifying various referential relationships,the coherence and consistency of the translated text can be improved.The report is divided into five chapters.Chapter one briefly introduces the background and significance of news translation project.The second chapter is the theoretical framework.This paper summarizes the development of the news translation from the perspectives of theoretical application and research fields,leads to the necessity of guiding news translation with communication theory,and sorts out the content of communication theory.Chapter three is the description of the translation process.Analyze the features of the original text,summarize the main idea of the original text and make the translation task plan.The fourth chapter is case analysis.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,this paper explores the translation methods in the process of the Chinese translation of news informative texts from three aspects: words,sentences,and texts,so as to realize the communicative function and make the translated text more acceptable to readers.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,which summarizes the contents of the translation report,summarizes the experience and shortcomings,and puts forward some suggestions for future research.This translation practice tries to sum up feasible translation methods to realize the communicative function in the process of news text translation and provide a reference for future information text translation practice.
