| The translation materials of this translation report are selected from the financial news of The Economist in the third and fourth quarter of 2019.The topics include the plight of Wall Street,financial crisis,operation of the company,equity change,financial investment,asset management,shareholder value,etc.The report focuses on the translation cases of news headlines,financial terms,culture-loaded words,long and difficult sentences and passive sentences in the Chinese translation of financial news,with functional equivalence as the main guidelines.The theory of functional equivalence was put forward by Eugene Nida,who advocated that translation should achieve functional equivalence between two languages rather than rigid correspondence on the surface of the text.It includes four aspects: lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence.Main methods used in this translation report are case analysis,induction and comparison.In the translation process,the author found that in terms of vocabulary,the English translation of financial news headlines is a highly general summary of the original information,which should be translated by using equivalent words as much as possible.However,for some abstract titles,the translator also needs to apply the theory of approximate equivalence flexibly to do free translation.The translator also needs to select appropriate dictionaries and other auxiliary tools to refer to financial terms.In addition,the translator can achieve the functional equivalence of culture-loaded words by accumulating relevant background culture,looking up parallel news and combining context.At the sentence level,the translator conducts translation studies from the perspectives of complex sentence and passive sentence,and adopts translation strategies such as attribute prepositioning,attribute post-positioning,linear translation and division,etc.to achieve functional equivalence.In terms of style,there are great differences between English and Chinese in the way of expression.When translating,it is often difficult to achieve the absolute equivalence of stylistic features on the premise of ensuring the equivalence of meaning.Therefore,the author believes that in this case,the translator needs to take the reader as the basis,use strategies such as amplification method,part of speech conversion,adjusting sentence structure and so on to make the translation as close as possible to the language habits of the target language.In addition,the translation should embody the author’s style and the language features of news reports,make the translation as concise,academic and accurate as the source texts.Finally,the author hopes that this translation report can help domestic readers understand more financial and economic knowledge and do contributions to the translation of financial and economic texts. |
