E-to-C Translation Report On China-related News Taken From The Economist

With the continuous development of globalization,the majority of Chinese people are increasingly concerned about hot issues at home and abroad.More and more media in China began to translate news reports on foreign media for Chinese netizens to read.Thus,translation is particularly important for Chinese readers with limited English proficiency to learn China from the perspective of foreign media.The Economist,as an international magazine with a large circulation in western countries,is known for its high-quality reports,in-depth analysis and unique language style.It ranks high on the must-read list of foreign media reports for Chinese readers.This article is a report of translation practice.The translation task is 14 pieces of China-related news selected from October to December in 2015 on The Economist,with a total of 10,000 words.Based on this translation practice,this paper summarizes the translation problems of titles,rhetorical devices and complex sentences in the process of translation.Under the guidance of Nord’s “Function plus Loyalty” principles,the author tries to solve the translation problem of the target titles by using free translation,borrowing translation and creative translation;Based on Bassnett’s “Cultural Translation Theory”,the author tries to use reservation,replacement and omission to solve the translation problem of rhetorical devices;Under the comparative analysis of the characteristics of English and Chinese languages,the methods of adjusting the word order,addition and division are applied to solve the translation problems of the complex English sentences.With the combination of theories and practice and thorough analysis,the author solves the translation problems,improves the translation ability,increases her translation experience,and provides valuable version of translation.The main contents are divided into four parts.The first chapter is the description of translation tasks,which mainly introduces the source and background of translation tasks,analyzes the source text in detail,and briefly describes the purpose and significance of this practice.The second chapter is the description of translation process,including preparation for translation,translation process and post-translation.The third chapter is the analysis of translation cases,including the description of translation problems of titles,rhetorical devices and complex sentences,the brief introduction of three theories,the analysis of the solutions and the summary of translation methods used in the various problems.The fourth chapter describes the experience the author gains in the process of translation as well as the existing problems.Moreover,the author makes some personal recommendations for translation of China-related news.
