This report has categorized translation difficulties selected from the English-Chinese translation of Scholastic Success With Workbooks(hereinafter referred to as SSWW),and proposed translation strategies based on the text typology theory proposed by Reiss.As an international best-selling workbook for children,SSWW is lively in language and rich in contents.Interesting and educational approaches are adopted to help children acquire knowledge.Meanwhile,illustrations of animals are used in this workbook to convey the image of bravery,friendliness,and unity,which subconsciously influence the formation of children’s values.Under the guidance of text typology theory,SSWW is classified as an informative text,but with both expressive and operative functions.Therefore,the Chinese translation is supposed to be accurate,explicit,and lively.Following these principles,this report analyzes translation difficulties arising in SSWW from three levels,that is,lexical level,syntactic level,and textual level,and puts forward corresponding translation strategies.Specifically,at the lexical level,transliteration is applied to deal with onomatopoeic words to make the expression accurate.Addition makes the expression explicit by adding implied subjects,predicates and objects.Omission elides hyphens of hyphenated words to dissolve ambiguities.Conversion and annotation are adopted to handle zero-translation words to make the expression smooth.At the syntactic level,conversion,coordinated translation,and addition are adopted to deal with imperative sentences,attributive clauses,and passive sentences appeared in SSWW.At the textual level,the translation of SSWW achieves cohesion by clarifying the reference meaning,adding or deleting conjunctions,and improving lexical cohesion,while achieving coherence between the table of contents and the text of the six workbooks with the addition of “Knowledge Point”.This translation enriches the research perspective of the informative texts,brings interesting workbooks for domestic children,and provides future reference for translation practice and translation research of similar texts.
