In today’s fast-paced society, mental health has become an increasingly prominent topic, and the number of readers turning to psychological books has increased significantly.More people are now paying attention to the translation and research of foreign psychology popular science works on psychology. With this in mind, this project has selected The Instant Mood Fix,the work of Olivia Remes from the Institute of Mental Health,University of Cambridge, for translation. This book, published in May 202,without any Chinese version, has ten chapters and about 30,000 words in total. The Instant Mood Fix describes different kinds of psychological phenomena and gives mental fix strategies accordingly.Based on Reiss’ s Text Typology, the author’s writing intention and readers’ reading experience, the text of The Instant Mood Fix mainly has the following two features of types—Informative Text and Operative Text. The former is used to introduce some of the psychological knowledge and the relative scientific research process of the author’s academic team;the latter, based on the former,is used to give a series of useful strategies for mood fixing when the readers are in an emergency,to release their mental situation.According to the features of both of the texts, realizing the intention of the source text and the acceptability of the target text to the largest extent has become the biggest challenge of this translation practice.According to Text Typology, the informative text pays more attention in terms of the semantic, grammatical and stylistic characteristics, and this is reflected in the translation. So,they can be translated by using literal translation as the main solution, together with free translation, paraphrase and other methods. With such kind of combined method,it can be possible to accurately transfer the psychological knowledge and experimental principle in the book.As for the operative texts, they do not simply convey certain information in a linguistic form but are distinctive in always presenting information with a particular perspective,an explicit purpose, involving a non-linguistic result, that is the readers’ changing behavior. Thus,to translate such kind of text, some more flexible methods such as free translation, amplification and order adjustment can be used. While the text in this book has the features of the former two, which belong to the compositive text given by Reiss. Thus, during translation, methods like paraphrase, addition, imitation and so on can be adopted and the translation process is more flexible.By doing so,this research can provide a little bit of reference for the future translation of psychological works. |
